Today's lead article in Het Laatste Nieuws (the biggest national newspaper in Belgium) was about the crash of soccer player Jonathan Legear - ex-Anderlecht player and now playing in one of those former Russian countries.
Obviously drunk, he drove his Porsche sportscar into a food shop. He stopped right before the counter, nearly hitting a customer who wanted to pay. The customer escaped by jumping up the car and only has a broken ankle and some bruises. But the shop is totally damaged.
This raises the question if soccer players aren't paid too much?
Soccer players often are enlisted when they are still very young and most of them don't have a decent schooling or degree. Imo they often don't have a lot of IQ either (because who want to kick a ball when you have brains?) and parents who are out on money.
These young lads are paid astronomous sums of money to be a member of a club in the first league, and when they play, they get even more.
And what do they do? Buy expensive - and fast - cars, drink themselves to kingdom come and date fotomodels.
Sports should be for volunteers only. No pay, only the pleasure of competing and doing something you like.
What's your opinion?
